I am using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy and GeForce with Nvidia as graphic card chipset. Until yesterday I can't change my screen resolutions, default is 1024 x 768 and its a maximal resolution. I am usually set the screen resolutions to 1280 x 960 when I am in Windows XP. Then one of my friend told me try to use this command in order to increase my screen resolutions.

k4tz@k4tz-desktop:~$ sudo
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Password:

xserver-xorg postinst warning:
overwriting possibly-customised configuration

file; backup in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.20080604150522

desktop1

After we use the command then we have to give an answer for some questions.

What type of graphic cards chipset we are using, for example ATI, Savage, S3, Nvidia. I am using Nvidia.

Video Modes to be use by the X server, you can choose as you wish. For me 1280 x 960.

Dont forget to restart your GDM (Gnome Desktop Manager)

k4tz@k4tz-desktop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

If you have a problem with X server after you restart the GDM then you have to reconfigure again. Try again the above command, perhaps you not give correct information about your graphic card chipset or maybe your VGA + screen are limited your resolution.

Note : I had problem with windows (minimize, maximize and close windows) and can't open terminal, try this :

System - Preferences - Desktop Effects
