Drupal Tutorial Series : Terminology
There are many words and terms in drupal we should to know. It will help you learn drupal.
Blocks
are boxes of content that may be rendered into certain regions of your web pages. Blocks can be placed in various content areas. They are usually generated automatically by modules, but administrators can create blocks manually.
Menus
are a collection of links (menu items) used to navigate a website.
Modules
A module is software (code) that extends Drupal features and/or functionality. Core modules are those included with the main download of Drupal. Contributed (or "contrib") modules are available for separate download from the modules section of downloads. Note: Be sure that the version of the contributed module you wish to use matches your version of Drupal releases section lists modules by Drupal version.
- Node
- Almost all content in Drupal is stored as a node. When people refer to "a node" all they mean is a piece of content stored within Drupal. A node could be a poll, a story, an image, a book page, etc.
Path
In Drupal terms, path usually refers to the url to a specific function or piece of content. Drupal can use "clean url's" when the path module is enabled.
Roles
allow you to fine tune the security and administration of Drupal. A role defines a group of users that have certain privileges as specified in Access Control. By default, Drupal comes with two user roles:
Anonymous user: this role is used for users that don't have a user account or that are not authenticated. Authenticated user: this role is automatically granted to all logged in users.
Taxonomy or Categories
The taxonomy module allows you to classify content into categories and subcategories; it allows multiple lists of categories for classification (controlled vocabularies) and offers the possibility of creating thesauri controlled vocabularies that indicate the relationship of terms), taxonomies (controlled vocabularies where relationships are indicated hierarchically), and free vocabularies where terms, or tags, are defined during content creation.
- Teaser
- The first few words or sentences of a piece of content, usually with a link to the complete node.
- Theme
- A theme is a file or collection of files (php, theme, css, jpg, gif, png), which together determine the look and feel of a site. There are additional themes available in the themes section of downloads.
Users
are the accounts registered on your site.
- Views
- A powerful contributed module which allows site developers a simple graphical interface for modifying the presentation of content. Views permits selection of specific fields to display, filtration against various node attributes, choice of basic layout options (ie. list, full nodes, teasers, etc.), and other more advanced features.
- Weight
- Weight is a term used by Drupal to define the priority or order in which an function is processed or a block / node is displayed. From Drupal 6, the weight field is adjusted dynamically using a drag-and-drop interface. Note: A lower weight value (-10) will float to the top of lists, while heavier value (+10) weights will appear lower in lists.
