Windows: Shutdown Problems in XP
Had a shutdown problems? Perhaps you can try this. It works for me. One of my friends can't turn off her computer although she had click Shutdown button. I find it here.
Start Regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Set the value of PowerDownAfterShutdown to 1.If the value isn't present, add it by creating the string value PowerDownAfterShutdown and setting the value to 1
Note: If that methods are not working for you, perhaps it was other shutdown problems, try every methods in this site.
Speed up Shutdown Time
When Windows shuts down, each running process is given 20 seconds to perform cleanup work by default. If a process does not respond within this time-out period, Windows displays the "Wait, End Task, or Cancel" dialog box for the process, which prompts you to wait for another 20 seconds, stop the process, or cancel the shutdown process. In other words if you fill the value lower than 20 seconds then you'll have a faster shutdown process.
Open Regedit and navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\’
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value.
Set it to ‘5000'.
Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value
Set it to ‘5000' also.
This setting only for current users, for all users you can use this:Open REGEDIT and navigate to ‘HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop’
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value.
Set it to ‘5000'.
Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value.
Set it to ‘5000' also.
Note: '5000', this value expressed in milliseconds. Restart the computer for the change to take effect
