Harming People When Offering Tawaf
Question :
As-salamu `alaykum.
During Hajj, I noticed that some people especially from Southeast Asia
andTurkey do Tawaf in groups, pushing and causing harm to others. What
advice would you give them regarding this behavior? In my group, we
agreed to meet at a certain point after Tawaf as it is impossible to do
it together without harming others. Also, some men will punch others in
the back to make way for their wives yelling “my hurma.”. Indeed,
during Tawaf, I had the ability to cause harm by pushing back, but I
refrained from doing so, while others became angry and pushed back. To
me this is a sign that the person is ignorant of the purpose of Hajj.
They are there to seek forgiveness and wipe their sins away, not commit
new ones. What advice would you give to such people? Thank you!
Answer (Sheikh Ahmad Kutty) :
Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear brother, thanks for your question and your concern about the
affairs of your fellow Muslims. May Allah accept your Hajj and `Umrah.
One of the objectives of Hajj is to maintain the spirit of brotherhood,
mercy, and unity among pilgrims. Harming pilgrims—in any way—is not
justified under any pretext. Pilgrims should avoid pushing and harming
others when doing Tawaf, or any other rite of Hajj, so that Almighty Allah would accept their Hajj.
Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada , states:
My advice to those who are cherishing the intention of performing Hajj
is that they should not do so unless they are mentally and spiritually
ready to perform it, for by engaging in acts such as the ones you
mentioned, they are invalidating their Hajj. It is necessary that we
refrain from all forms of wrangling, quarrelling, obscenities, lewdness
and frivolities during Hajj.
Therefore, anyone who is thinking of performing Hajj must attend
courses conducted by trained scholars. Such courses will enlighten them
about the rites of Hajj as well as its moral and spiritual aspects,
while educating them about the appropriate behavior and manners they
must have while performing this noble rite.
